Napatan Kingdom

Kush re-emerges with its capital at Napata, near the sacred mountain of Jebel Barkal.

747 BCE

The Black Pharaohs

Kushite king Piye conquers Egypt, founding the 25th Dynasty. Kushite pharaohs rule a unified Nile valley for nearly a century.

270 BCE

Meroë Era

Capital moves to Meroë; Kush becomes a powerhouse of iron-working and develops its own writing system — Meroitic.

350 CE

Decline of Meroë

The kingdom gradually transitions, but its art, architecture, and legacy continue to shape African civilization.
